Nightly Battles turns some of your battles into night battles, 20% of them by default. When a battle loads, the mod rolls the dice. On a hit, the map gets a moonlit sky, night fog and darker ambient light. Otherwise you play the normal daytime map.
- Wargaming’s own night maps. Steppes and Sweden use the night presets WG made for Onslaught, unchanged.
- Every other map at night too. The other 62 battle maps get a night preset built from WG’s night sky and moon. Each map keeps its own fog and shadows, and its own light, converted to night: streets and the space under bridges stay darker than open ground.
- Adjustable. Pick how often a battle takes place at night (0-100%), and choose whether night battles use night fog or the map’s normal daytime fog.
- Only you see it. Night is chosen per battle, on your client. Your teammates and enemies play their normal map.
Settings
With ModsSettingsAPI (by izeberg) installed, the settings are in the game’s mod settings:
- Night battle chance: how often a battle takes place at night (default 20%).
- Night fog: on uses the night fog; off uses the map’s normal daytime fog at night.
Changes apply from the next battle. Without ModsSettingsAPI, edit mods/configs/nightly_battles/config.json, which the mod creates on first start.
Fair play
Night battles are purely cosmetic and never give you an advantage:
- The mod only changes sky, moon, fog, color grading and ambient light. It doesn’t touch spotting, transparency, vehicle stats, aiming or anything else that affects gameplay.
- Night is never clearer than day. Fog is never thinner and never starts further away than on the day map, and muzzle flashes and other effects are never brighter.
Installation
- Copy nightly_battles_<version>.wotmod into World_of_Tanks/mods/<game version>/.
- Remove older versions of the mod from that folder.
The mod is built for one game version. After a game update, use the matching new version of the mod.
Known limitations
- On maps without a WG night version, the night is an approximation: the moon shines from WG’s night angle, while the map’s baked shadows were made for its daytime sun.
- Water on those maps looks dark instead of reflecting the night sky.
- Lights that are part of WG’s night maps (e.g. lamps) are not added.
Compatibility
- ModsSettingsAPI is optional and only needed for the in-game settings.
